A privately funded, nonprofit organization is creating a 3.2 million-acre wildlife sanctuary — American Prairie Reserve — in northeastern Montana, an area long known as cattle country.It is primarily owned by The Nature Conservancy and operated as a field research station by Kansas State University's Division of Biology. The Konza ecosystem contains forest, claypan, shrub and riparian communities in addition to the dominant tallgrass. Konza is dedicated to long-term ecological research, education and prairie conservation.One of my first roles at American Prairie Reserve was managing our relationship with National Geographic as they produced the hour-long film “American Serengeti” in 2010. That film celebrates our bison herd hitting 100 animals. With this spring’s calves, we are pushing the 1,000 animal mark.
