Each sentence advances the idea or aim of the previous sentence in a specific way: it extends, clarifies, nuances, exemplifies, specifies, or qualifies it. For me, revising was all about making sure that every paragraph, every sub–section, every close reading, served the purpose of that larger argument. Once I knew what I was trying to say, I decided how each chapter contributed to that argument, and I could therefore much more easily decide what needed to be added and what needed to be cut.
