I'm running an m50nv in my e30 mated with g250 stock e36 tranny and I noticed my 3rd gear grinds very hard to the point where it doesn't want to go in gear at higher rpms. I'm also running 3.73 LSD and my rpms are high on highway speed. So I have a spare g260 … This adapter bolts a K series to any BMW E36/E46 transmission, or to a Getrag 260 transmission from the E30. Unlike other adapter plates, ours are machined out of precision-ground 0.500” steel plate. By using steel instead of aluminum, our adapters are as thin as possible without compromising rigidity or thread strength. I just recently purchased a rebuilt transmission from Drive Gear in Chicago. $1,100 shipped. New bearings and replacement of any worn out synchros. I then sold them all my remaining cores as I don't have time to get into the transmission rebuilding business. Metric Mechanic also sells rebuilt transmissions.The Getrag 260 trans from the E30 is a longer ratio 5 speed, which will be preferable for certain BP-powered cars. We only plan to make an adapter plate for this trans that mounts to the BP, not the K. Since the E36 and E46 transmissions have shorter gears, they will do best when paired with a longer ratio rear end, especially for street cars. ...

The 260/5 (528e other than '82, 533/633) is the weakest of the transmissions (tho still good for 200k miles) and the 260/6 is supposedly much improved over the 260/5.

The bearings are not common so they're really expensive. It's easy to separate the front half of the box from the rear half though. You really need access to a press to do it all properly, and a 30mm thin walled deep socket (I made one) to undo the output shaft nut. The shift shafts can be a bit of a pain though.

If there isn't an obvious problem, it's likely best to source another transmission. If you loosen either of the two bolts for the reverse gear shaft, you'll need to reapply sealant when reinstalling.
