Twenty-four years later, Rembrandt painted his second and final anatomy lesson. Now the praelector was Dr Joan Deijman, Tulp's immediate successor. This painting, originally measuring 245 × 300 cm, was badly damaged in a fire in the 18th century and only the central portion (113 × 135 cm) of the lower half survived (Fig. 1).
