Abstract. Near-field optics has produced the highest optical resolution that has ever been achieved. The methods involved lie at the interface of far-field optical microscopy and scanned probe microscopy. This article describes the principles behind near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) and highlights its potential in cell biology.A near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) is used to study the local photoresponse of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 thin film solar cells. The grain boundaries of the small grains (<1 μm) show some ...

In coherent homodyne apertureless scanning near-field optical microscopy (ASNOM) the background field cannot be fully suppressed because of the interference between the different collected fields, making the images difficult to interpret. We show that implementing the heterodyne version of ASNOM allows one to overcome this issue. Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) allows for the characterization of optical properties of samples at the nanoscale, well below the diffraction limit of the interrogating wavelength. Typically, it relies on a model for the probe-sample interaction to extract complex optical constants of the sample.Section Overview: For ultra-high optical resolution, near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) is currently the photonic instrument of choice.Near-field imaging occurs when a sub-micron optical probe is positioned a very short distance from the sample and light is transmitted through a small aperture at the tip of this probe. [1,2] With a classic SNOM system, the topography and the intensity distribution can be obtained simultaneously, while the optical phase information is lost during probing. The ...The near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) or scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) [10,11] is a scanning probe based technique that can measure local optical and/or optoelectronic properties with sub-diffraction limit resolution. Since the resolution of NSOM does not depend on the wavelength of the light, visible and near ...

Polarization properties of apertureless-type scanning near-field optical microscope (a-SNOM) were studied. Polarization SNOM images were successfully measured with the spatial resolution of ~14 nm and the angle resolution better than 1°. We found that the polarization properties of optical signals could be decomposed into SNOM signal scattered ...Near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) is a relatively new technique that combines ultra high optical resolution, down to 70 nm, with single molecule detection sensitivity. As such, the technique holds great potential for direct visualisation of domains at the cell surface. Yet, NSOM operation under liquid conditions is far from trivial.…

Apertureless scanning near-field optical microscopy (ASNOM) enables one to reach high lateral resolution and to induce localized near-field effects. Experimentally, the vibration of the probe and a lock-in detection are frequently used to increase the signal-to-noise-ratio. In the present work, a finite-element method (FEM) is used to show ...A horizontal-type scanning near-field optical microscope with torsional mode operation toward high-resolution and non-destructive imaging of soft materials. Individual carbocyanine dye molecules in a sub-monolayer spread have been imaged with near-field scanning optical microscopy. Molecules can be repeatedly detected and spatially localized (to approximately lambda/50 where lambda is the wavelength of light) with a sensitivity of at least 0.005 molecules/(Hz)(1/2) and the orientation of each molecular dipole can be determined.Near-Field Scanning Optical Microscopy (NSOM) is a scanning probe technique that allows overcoming the diffraction limit in optics [1]. In NSOM, the lateral resolution is basically limited by the size of the light source - the tip - as well as by the tip-surface distance which
