This would give you the gas smell & would overwhelm the CAT. The rear O2 sensor, which monitors the CAT, would give you the P0420 CEL code. You'll want to take a look at your 02 sensor and make sure you have space for a spacer (or maybe even if you can get it out), might need a 90 degree spacer (i'm not familiar with the SH forester).
