Turkic languages have been spoken across vast territory from the Balkans to China for many centuries. Within the Turkic group, Uzbek and Uyghur form the Qarluq sub-branch. According to the 2010 census Uyghurs make up 45.21 percent of the population of Xinjiang, numbering 8,345,622 people.
