I have never been able to find people brave enough in pugs to try these quests, and consequently either die trying to solo or pass them up.

I've recommended 2/18 barbarian/cleric human before for solo hardcore gameplay. This starts with 2 barbarian, then goes full cleric. Blood tribute from barbarian is a phenomenal defensive tool that falls off at higher levels. Warpriest cleric is sturdy with a lot of defense, and doesn't lose much at all going 18 levels compared to 20.
