After having about 5 rings replaced on mine I have seen several failure modes. My driveshaft was replaced for wear of the c-clip groove like that seen on yours. I took it out today and found I had taken on water. I was looking around for the reason. I pushed back the bellows around the driveshaft and the water just flooded in.
