As we know it's about a 75 to 90 day cycle from figglet to ripened fig. The leaves have nothing to do with the formation of the fig. I agree the leaves are mainly there to shade some of the fruit, and gather energy from the sun (photosynthesis) and the collect moisture from the dew and humidity.
