Ford rear axle identification codes
Hello, I have to overhaul a 1966 Mustang Fastback K Code 4 speed manual rear axle,,, the code on the rear axle plate is: WCZ-S / 3.50 SKD980. I would like to know if this is the correct rear axle that is on the car… ? and according to the 1966 workshop manual it would be an 8.75″ axle and not a 9″…. ?Front Axle Codes While the parts catalog says "The third digit of the axle code identifies the ratio and/or capacity of the front axle", that is not true.As seen below, there are only 4 codes (2 - 5) and they do not define the axle ratio nor capacity.In fact, to find the front axle ratio you need the codes off the axle itself, as shown here:

The 9 means it's a 9 inch rear axle, 952A is the axle plant manufacturing code, all Cougars & Mustangs had 900 series codes except some of the early Shelbys.
