We have a 383 10.5-1 comp with Dart pro 1 platinums 215's, Motown intake port matched , Pro- Systems 950, with a comp solid flat tapped cam 1.6 rockers 598 lift. Idles at 800- 850. and it SLAMS you in the seat. in a 67 chevelle 4 speed with 411's its a member on here's car, Benchseat racer .Sure you can build them "cheap", I did up a 406 for 1500.00 top too bottom, but in the end i was disappointed, Any decent engine these days will not be cheap IF you want power out of it & want it to last. I have about 3000.00 in my 469 BBC & it has stock heads that only have 175.00 in them, I had the lower end balanced with all the good stuff ...

A good block is still weaker in the webbing than a 350. (not as much material) 4 bolts are weaker than 2 bolts. Pros- Your not racing it, it uses the same accessories as 350 except the flywheel and balancer, to the average joe you might pull it off as a 350. Cons- Has a bad rod ratio (1.48:1).

In my opinion, if someone owns a 350 block that is a good block, and wants to build a better motor then a 350, a 383 dollar for dollar is about equal and will usually out perform a equal 350. however, if starting from sctrach, without a block, a 400 based motor is a much better choice. As for the 396.

So, the verdict for me was: to go with a fully forged 383 with a good package. Aim for optimum cam and heads. ….
